My Work at the Various Residencies
Residencies have been a transformative part of my artistic journey, offering me the time, space, and resources to explore my practice in new and exciting ways. Each residency has provided me with opportunities to push the boundaries of my work and connect with diverse communities, resulting in a deeper understanding of my creative process and the impact my art can have.
Monson Arts Residency (October 16–November 9, 2023)
During my transformative month-long art residency in Monson, Maine, spanning from October 16 to November 9, 2023, I crafted the final piece that encapsulates the essence of my creative journey. These detailed shots serve as windows into the emotions and gratitude that permeated my artistic exploration, unencumbered by the daily challenges of life.
The artwork is a fusion of archive photos capturing New York City's subway, the MTA, and the vibrant Chinatown neighborhood, seamlessly intertwined with images of my family and their surroundings. This amalgamation reflects the dynamic and bustling nature of New York, a city that I navigated through chaos and contrast.
To amplify the visual impact, I employed high and vibrant colors, juxtaposed with inversion techniques on the faces. The inversion, when viewed through a smartphone, transforms the colors from a soothing pale blue to a striking reddish-brown, offering viewers a dual perspective on the painting.
The deliberate use of inversion invites audiences to engage with the artwork through their phone cameras. By leveraging modern technology, viewers can explore the nuanced relationship between color, perspective, and individual interpretation. This innovative approach encourages a fresh and alternative depiction of the image, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of perception.
As I immersed myself in the serene landscape of Maine, my thoughts reverberated with reflections on my hometown, New York. This residency experience not only provided a respite from the urban hustle but also served as a catalyst for weaving my personal narratives into the vibrant tapestry of my artistic expression.
